Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) has an opening for a full-time Sr. Academic Advisor. The successful candidate will possess outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills; flexibility and adaptability; a demonstrated ability to perform in a fast-paced, high volume environment; demonstrated ability to work with diverse clients and stakeholders; and possess a high level of detail orientation. Prior experience working with online students, transfer students, and/or military students highly desired.

Duties include:
-Serve as a resource for junior academic advisor staff and provide guidance, training and problem resolution assistance as needed.
-Provide academic advising to students enrolled in online and hybrid programs related to program requirements, such as: explaining degree requirements, assisting in course planning, explaining academic policies, and registration information. Maintain up-to-date knowledge about programs and requirements. Informs students about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses; change of program, major and/or transfer institution). Audit and monitor student progress and provide counseling to support student timely program completion.

-Serve as primary point of contact for enrolled students in support in their student experience. Respond to student inquiries via email, in-person, and phone calls. Create messaging for current students around registration, graduation, and academic policies to support the student experience. Maintain student advising records.

-Provide general advising for prospective students related to program requirements, degree options. Assists students in the development of an educational plan including choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals. Conduct transfer credit assessment for prospective students and current students. Advise students on transfer credit policies. Collaborate with admissions staff as needed to ensure accurate seamless hand-off between admissions and enrollment for new students.

-Coordinate planning and execution of student events, including but not limited to: student orientation, open house/information sessions, student development and skills sessions, and Commencement activities. Provide recommendations for continuous improvement to all services for academic advising purposes and to integrate practices and technology aimed at improving student experience.

-This position performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
