I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Division of External Relations is seeking a Director, Federal Government Relations. The Director of Federal Government Relations will represent the George Washington University to elected and appointed officials. The Director will develop strategies for pursuing new partnerships, conduct research into policy issues and guide the university’s interactions with appointed and elected officials. This position will report to the Assistant Vice President, Government and Community Relations.

Responsibilities include:

Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory proposals in the areas of federal research funding, health-related issues and higher education issues to determine their impact on the university.

Manage the relationships with key congressional legislators, administration officials, and federal agencies with a special emphasis on alumni. Establish relationships with program officers and administrators of major funding agencies.

Maintain an in-depth knowledge of national higher education issues and a national network of contacts with leaders in the higher education community. Liaise on behalf of the institution with government relations organizations and coalitions, and contribute to higher education and research advocacy efforts.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of five years of experience in government relations, and/or public policy and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with federal government officials, including senior administration officials, members of Congress, and federal agency officials such as National Institute of Health and National Science Foundation.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
