Job Description Summary:

The Division of Information Technology ( is the chief provider of technology infrastructure, services and applications at GW. The Division partners with stakeholders across GW to equip students, staff and faculty with the technology know-how and tools necessary to achieve academic excellence.

Reporting to the Assistant Finance Director, the Senior Accountant supports the Division’s Financial Services department. The Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records and reporting the department’s financial position to various stakeholders on a monthly basis in a manner that showcases the distribution, allocation and/or utilization of financial resources. She/he assists in the preparation of monthly budget reports, quarterly forecasts, annual budgets, and Five Year Plans. The incumbent acts as a liaison between the department and other University offices to explain and/or resolve complex financial problems related to accounting reports or documents as well as ensure accuracy and timeliness of all reimbursements due to DIT. She/he resolves any issues that arise with DIT telecom billing. The Senior Accountant advises Financial Services as well as other DIT stakeholders on financial matters related to reporting requirements and/or solutions of financial management problems. This individual is responsible for review and accounting of DIT Sponsored Projects, P Card expenditures and approves purchase requests and other expenditures, as allowed by the Assistant Finance Director.

The ideal candidate has strong analytical, problem solving, as well as written and communication skills which can be applied in the review of complex financial data as related to budget tracking and actual spending trends analysis. The position is based at GW’s campus in Ashburn, VA, the University’s flagship research and technology center, strategically positioned in the Northern Virginia technology corridor, but may require periodic travel between GW’s Ashburn and Foggy Bottom campuses.

The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Knowledge of the preparation and review process of cost models
  • Experience with the review and accounting of sponsored projects
  • Effective written and communication skills
  • Experience working with complex budgets
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience working with Oracle Financial Systems, and Pinnacle Software or equivalent
  • Strong Knowledge of capital project planning
  • Experience functioning within a team oriented work environment
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred
