Job Description Summary:

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking an Associate Director, Foundation Relations for the George Washington University. DAR is responsible for leading the university’s alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWUs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

Reporting to the Director of Foundation Relations, the Associate Director will establish effective working relationships with school/unit fundraisers, deans, department heads, faculty and administrative staff of the university to accomplish foundation fundraising goals.

The Associate Director, Foundation Relations guides George Washington University leadership, faculty, and staff in initiating, strengthening, and managing strategic relationships with foundations to advance philanthropic support for various GW priorities and programs. Part of GW’s central development office, the Foundation Relations team is responsible for supporting cross-university projects, programs, and priorities as well as supporting and coordinating foundation fundraising efforts across GW’s ten schools.

This position plays a central role in developing or assisting with the creation of letters of support, concept papers, proposals and reports for funders, on behalf of individual schools and faculty. This includes a thorough understanding of GW systems for proposal submissions including assistance with routing proposals through the Sponsored Projects office.

The Associate Director, Foundation Relations also establishes and maintains effective working relationships with school/unit fundraisers, deans, department heads, faculty and administrative staff of the university, so work can be coordinated and developed as needed.

This position Secures foundation visits, and prepares briefing packets for university leadership and other university representatives and also demonstrates prospect research skills and the ability to develop foundation fundraising strategies involving leadership and faculty from diverse disciplines.

This position requires travel for visits to foundations.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

The ideal candidate should have a minimum of three years of fundraising experience with the majority of the experience working with foundations. Desirable experience includes work in a higher education development office, and/or the development office of a medium to large nonprofit organization.

Must have exceptional verbal and written skills to effectively communicate with donors, institutional leaders, faculty, and staff. Proven experience in soliciting five- and six-figure grants and gifts highly desired. Candidates should be detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills, and have the ability to work on multiple projects with different colleagues simultaneously.

A Bachelor’s degree is required for this position; an advanced degree is preferred.
