Job Description Summary:

Our Department of Neurology serves to fulfill the tripartite mission of all academic departments contributing to patient care, education, and discovery that leads to new therapeutics. We partner with colleagues throughout George Washington University, George Washington University Hospital, the Children’s National Health System, and the National Institutes of Health. Patients benefit from state of the art care utilizing all current medical technologies. A core of dedicated faculty provide outstanding educational program for residents and medical students based on a rich patient population from the Washington, D.C. community. Research is active in areas of dementia, cerebrovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, and myasthenia gravis. Since September 1, 2011, the Department has begun a period of major expansion with a goal of becoming the regional leader in the provision of neurological care. The Laboratory for Myasthenia Gravis (MG) Research is dedicated to “a world without MG.” To achieve that goal the Laboratory has a broad-based research program dedicated to understanding the pathogenesis of MG with a focus on development of new therapeutics. Our therapy development program spans pre-clinical programs, clinical trials, and biomarker discovery. We are interested in the assessment anti-apoptotic factors in the maintenance of autoimmunity and optimization of complement therapeutics in disease therapy. The lab utilizes broad-based discovery approaches (metabolomics, miRNA profiles) and focused hypothesis driven methods using ELISA, flow cytometry and qPCR, and behavioral assessments of animals.

The Post-Doctoral Scientist will be involved in studies of human tissues and cells as well as animal models.

Responsibilities include:
(1) Plans independent research and analyzes and publishes results;
(2) Provides functional and administrative supervision of supporting research staff and transfers technical knowledge and expertise;
(3) Develops protocol and criteria;
(4) In conjunction with the Principal Investigator, may present research at conferences and meetings; and
(5) Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assisting duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a PhD in the field or in a related area.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

-PhD in immunology and additional post-doctoral training in autoimmune disorders is preferred.
- Extensive knowledge in immunology, flow cytometry, and experience in use of animal models.
– Excellent communication skills and team work.
